Every commercial vehicle operating in Canada must pass ‘a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) to remain roadworthy and compliant. Fail your CVIP inspection, then you could face ‘a whole range of consequences. Fines, delays, and even shutdowns of your operations.
We asked our team what seven key areas youll want to double—and maybe even triple—check to make sure you pass your next inspection with flying colours.
1. Brakes
When youre hauling serious weight, your air brake system needs to be in peak condition. Inspectors will scrutinize everything from the air compressor and dryer to the slack adjusters, ‘S-cams, and brake shoes. Any sign of air leaks, worn shoes, or out-of-adjustment slack adjusters can result in ‘a fail.
Remember, your brakes are your best form of defence against dangerous situations on the road. Thats why even the slightest violation can cause you to fail.
2. Steering & Suspension
Loose steering or worn suspension components will sink your CVIP faster than ‘a flat tire in -30°’C. And trust us, weve seen plenty of those in Edmonton.
Make sure the kingpins, tie rods, ball joints, and leaf springs or air bags are rock solid. Excessive play or visible damage- You better believe thats ‘a failure.
Also, dont sleep on your shock absorbers. Theyre not just there to make those bumpy Alberta roads more comfortable to drive on; theyre also essential in helping you maintain control in less-than-ideal conditions.
3. Tires & Wheels
You cant pass inspection on bald tires or cracked sidewalls. Inspectors check for minimum tread depth, uneven wear, and signs of misalignment. Also expect them to look at rim condition, lug torque, and whether theres any oil or grease leakage from your wheel ends; the tell-tale signs of ‘a failed wheel bearing.
4. Lighting & Electrical
If it lights up, it better work. CVIP inspections require that all exterior lighting, including headlights, brake lights, signal lights, reflectors, and clearance markers, be fully functional. Also, your battery and wiring harness need to be secure and free from corrosion or fraying.
5. Frame & Body
Your frame and crossmembers must be free of rust-through, cracks, or weld failures. Edmontons road salt can eat ‘a frame alive, so keep up on your undercoating and rust prevention.
Cab mounts, hood latches, bumpers, and fenders are also part of the inspection. Everything needs to be securely mounted, and if its loose, expect bad news from the inspector.
6. Engine & Driveline
Pop the hood and start hunting. Any sign of oil, coolant, fuel, or DEF leaks is not going to be taken well by the inspector. The serpentine belt, fan clutch, alternator, and pulleys must be functioning without excessive wear.
Theyll also eyeball your driveshafts, ‘U-joints, and differentials. If your gear oils low, or your differential housing is cracked, its game over.
7. Exhaust & Emissions
Modern heavy-duty vehicles in Alberta must have functioning after-treatment systems—were talking EGR, DPF, SCR, and DEF tanks. Inspectors will check that there are no exhaust leaks, all sensors are operational, and regeneration systems are working correctly.
‘A cracked DPF housing or ‘a missing DEF cap could lead to ‘a fail. Make sure your Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) levels are topped, and your check engine light isnt hiding any emissions-related trouble codes.
